This march was highly successful in having over a quarter of a million people of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds participate and it was where King gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.


This speech was memorable in the fact that it pointed out the various injustices that American blacks continued to experience in the country despite their gaining freedom from slavery after the Civil War. As quoted from the speech King declared that "One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
